Building knowledge and skills on behavioural and cultural insights (BCI)

Behavioural and cultural insights (BCI) can be used strategically to reach health targets. While there is increasing commitment to using BCI for health across the WHO European Region, a need for further investment and capacity-building has been identified to fully leverage its value.

Under the headline of LEARN BCI, WHO/Europe has developed several training opportunities for Member States:

  • online training modules with self-paced multimedia training and facilitated online group discussions;
  • an annual face-to-face LEARN BCI school offering a variety of plenary presentations, facilitated discussions and case-based practice working sessions; and
  • in-country, face-to-face trainings to collaborate on BCI implementation projects.

LEARN BCI applies an interdisciplinary and evidence-based approach drawing on social, cultural and behavioural science and health humanities research disciplines. It aims to introduce basic BCI-related theoretical frameworks for understanding and addressing the barriers and drivers of health behaviours, introduce relevant research and evaluation methods, and demonstrate the application of BCI approaches in practice.
