Updating the WHO list of pathogens with epidemic and PHEIC potential
As per the World Health Assembly (WHA) resolution in 2016, the Research & Development (R&D) Blueprint in WHO has been working with experts around the world to generate the science on diseases that have the potential to lead to important outbreaks (graded emergencies, PHEICs or pandemics) and for which there are no or insufficient medical countermeasures.
In order to focus research efforts, a list of priority viruses is generated and published based on an international, open and multidisciplinary process, using rigorous and transparent methods. The last prioritization exercise was conducted in 2018 and updating the list is long overdue.
Independent group of experts will review the evidence and will generate a revised list of recommended pathogens for accelerated scientific research by the global community. It is anticipated that the new list will be available by the end of 2022.
If you are a subject matter expert and are interested in contributing to this exercise, please approach the WHO Secretariat (rdblueprint@who.int) to explore ways in which your expertise can contribute.
